I was glancing through the supermarket circulars this week and noticed coupons for several cereal products sold by the major food manufacturers. Across the labels are many enticing descriptions – cinnamon, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, etc. – that consumers associate with health and nourishment. Gee, what a great job marketers do presenting these cereals!
Several of them are also labeled “new.” Through clever advertising, the word “new” is often associated with “better.” Somehow, I was suspicious. I went off to the market to take a look for myself, and here’s what I found:
·The presence of high fructose corn syrup in many of the major cereal brands;
·Little or no whole grains in nearly all of the cereals;
·The presence of trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils) in some cereals;
·The presence of aspartame, a sugar replacement chemical, in some cereals;
·Many chemical additives of no nutritional value; and

·Several cereals with sugar as the greatest ingredient, per volume.
As a holistic nutrition counselor, it really upsets me to see hardworking people paying good money for food that may be damaging their health. With all the publicity about healthy eating and concerns about obesity, one would think it would be easy to make good choices in the supermarket. Nothing could be further from the truth, and until we look beyond the fancy labels and turn to the real ingredients, we will continue to be misled.
Obesity: the epidemic
Statistics on obesity were just released by the Centers for Disease Control, and the numbers are climbing. In this article I have highlighted the poor quality of many mainstream cereals, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We can go on to look at bread, energy drinks, soda, condiments, soups, croutons – you name it – and you will find poor quality ingredients in many, along with excess sugar. The key principle is this: Any sugar that is not burned off converts to fat. The presence of sugar in virtually all processed, packaged foods is the cause of sugar consumption per person to be in excess of 150 pounds per year. This is a major factor in the growing rates of obesity in our country.
