Sri Lanka is a mystical place. Lying off the southern coast of India, Sri Lanka has welcomed travellers for thousands of years. Egyptians and other peoples came to secure sweet smelling and health inducing Cinnamon. It was a stop-over point for merchants travelling between western Asia and Southeast Asia. Today Sri Lanka itself is the destination. People world-wide take Sri Lanka holidays for the beautiful beaches, lush forests, raging rivers, polite people and the mystical, holistic healing power of Ayurvedic medicine.

The hotels offer stunning views of the islands lush green mountains, white sand beaches and aquamarine waters. Throw open the windows of your hotel room and cool breezes waft in bearing the scent of cinnamon. The rooms are comfortably appointed with large feather beds, furniture of teak, ebony, satinwood and mahogany, high thread count India cotton bed clothes, ceiling fans and large shaded verandas. From the verandas of hotels, the sky seems to be at your fingertip and the whole island within your purview.

There is much to do on holidays. You can explore the tropical forest on the island’s south-central and wander along meandering trails leading to refreshing rivers and spectacular waterfalls. Trekking is a popular pastime and local guides can lead you to many of the sites of interest. Yala National Park in the southeast is home to herds of elephants, deer and peacocks. Some say Sri Lanka is the ancient land of Tarshish from where the Israelite King Solomon received peacocks, hardwoods and cinnamon. Wilpattu National Park on the northeast is a haven for waterbirds. Storks, Spoonbills, Ibis and Pelicans roam freely and build their nests here. There is also the Buddhist ‘Temple of Tooth’, the archaeological site ‘Fortress in the Sky’, aqueducts, reservoirs and numerous other remains of Sri Lanka’s ancient civilization.

Many who visit Sri Lanka come in search of Ayurveda medicine. The term Ayurveda means science of life. Ayurveda medicine is said to be the oldest, most complete holistic medical system available. The practitioners seek to attain and maintain harmony among the three vital forces of the body, earth, wind and fire, using a combination of physiology, philosophy, psychology and spirituality. They employ herbs, flowers, leaves, rocks, massage, meditation, water and fire.

Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to relax, heal your mind, body and spirit and have fun. Reward yourself with a visit there.
