Proceeds from the massages, as well as the whole day’s events, go to the Rock County Humane Society and Friends of Noah animal rescue.
“I’ve always loved animals, especially horses and dogs,” Dittmer said of why she started her business three years ago. “I like the holistic approach to the health care of animals.”
Benefits of animal massages include increased flexibility and blood flow, the promotion of healthy tissue, and improved temperament, she said.
For example, Dittmer has massaged dogs at the Green County Humane Society where she said the staff told her the dogs were much more approachable afterwards.
“You get these dogs who are terrified in a strange place and a little cage, and you give them some one-on-one time with a deep massage and they just blossom,” she said. “They’re much more laid-back and not as fearful of where they’re at.”
Though they initially don’t know what to expect with a massage, animals soon find themselves enjoying it, Dittmer said.
Whereas, some dogs lie flat out on their sides, no horse has ever laid down for her. Horses do, however, lick their lips, yawn, stretch and drop their head in a relaxed state, she said.
One Dalmatian familiar with massages even jumped up on the table once, laid down on its belly and stretched out its back legs.
